Police arrest girl, 12, for online school threat in Mililani

Honolulu police on Thursday arrested a 12-year-old girl at Mililani Middle School for allegedly making an online threat to shoot up the school on Wednesday.

According to a police bulletin, the girl was identified and arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening. The complainant was a 41-year-old woman.

Principal Shannon Tamashiro urged all students and families to refrain from reposting threats and rumors online, according to a letter sent to Mililani’s parents and guardians. She said reposting a threat online was the same as making the threat itself, contributing to prolonging the incident.

“All threats to our school are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly,” Tamashiro said in the letter. “Terroristic threats are considered Class A student conduct offenses. Penalties can range from detention to suspension with the possibility of arrest and serious criminal charges. We ask for your assistance to speak to your child about the consequences for such acts and to encourage them to make good decisions.”

The community’s voice is critical in keeping the school’s campus safe, Tamashiro said in the letter.

“We need your help to remain vigilant and to speak up immediately if you see something suspicious that could be a threat in our neighborhood, online or on social media,” according to the letter. “Please remember, ‘If you see something, say something.’”
