Pedestrian, 61, dies after being hit on Sand Island Access Road

A 61-year-old man died Monday night after he walked into a lane of Sand Island Access Road and was struck by a passing vehicle, police said.

At about 7:20 p.m., the pedestrian was walking north along the side of the road near Auiki Street when he “entered the traffic lane and was struck” by a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old man, according to the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services officials said paramedics treated the man with advanced life support and took him in critical condition to a hospital where police said he was pronounced dead.

The driver remained at the scene and was not injured, according to police, adding that speed, drugs, or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the fatal crash.

This was Oahu’s 25th traffic fatality on Oahu, compared with 10 at the same time in 2024.
