University of Hawaii Warrior volleyball players Colton Cowell, left, Patrick Gasman and Rado Parapunov celebrated a point against the Stanford Cardinals in a game, Feb. 1, at the Stan Sheriff Center. Gasman today was named the Big West’s defensive player of the week in men’s volleyball.

Hawaii junior middle Patrick Gasman today was named the Big West’s defensive player of the week in men’s volleyball.

The 6-foot-10 Gasman was impressive as No. 2 Hawaii (8-0) went 3-0 on its first road trip of the season. Playing in six out of nine sets, he had a combined 19 blocks — 18 assist and one solo — as well as 15 kills.

Against Saint Francis on Friday, Gasman tied his career high with eight blocks. In Saturday’s rematch with host Queens, he was in on six blocks and five kills when playing only in Set 1.

Also today, the Rainbow Warriors remained second for a fourth consecutive week behind unanimous No. 1 Long Beach State (12-0) in the AVCA Division I-II Top 15.

There was no change among the next four teams with UC Irvine (10-2) at No. 3, UCLA (10-2) No. 4, Pepperdine (8-2) No. 5 and UC Santa Barbara (11-3) No. 6.

Hawaii returns to the Stan Sheriff Center this week with two matches against Lincoln Memorial (7-4). The Warriors play the Railsplitters at 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Sunday.
