An 83-year-old man who died from injuries after evacuating from Saturday’s high-rise fire at Rainbow Place in Moiliili has been identified as Roy Mogi of Honolulu. The fire on a top floor unit in the Rainbow Place condominium building caused $484,000 in damage to the unit and $40,000 to its contents.

The 83-year-old man who collapsed after evacuating Saturday’s high-rise fire at Rainbow Place in Moiliili and later died has been identified as Roy Mogi of Honolulu, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said today.

The cause of death was blunt force injury to the head with subdural hemorrhage from an apparent fall. The manner of death was classified as an accident, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The fire broke out in unit 2101 on the top floor of the high-rise at 2754 Kuilei St. at about 10 a.m. Saturday.

Residents in the building evacuated through stairwells.

Emergency Medical Services said an 83-year-old man, later identified as Mogi, collapsed while he was across the street from the condominium building after he evacuated.

He was taken in critical condition to a hospital, where he died later on Saturday.

Mogi resided in a unit on the sixth floor with his wife.

Fire investigators determined the blaze in unit 2101 was caused by an unspecified arc in a lighted display case. It was ruled an accident.

The damage was estimated at $484,000 to the unit and $40,000 to its contents.

Damage estimates to neighboring units were not immediately available.

Rainbow Place, built in 1976, does not have a fire sprinkler system.
