Letter: Unless you take action, whatever will be, will be

Doris Day just died. Many of us remember her as a major movie star and singer. Probably her biggest hit song was “Que Sera Sera” or, “Whatever will be, will be.”

At the time of my college graduation that song was No. 1 in the country, and it was the topic of the commencement speech. The speaker said it was a beautiful song sung by a beautiful woman but with a terrible message.

“Whatever will be, will be” is not the way we should make our way in the world, he said. That philosophy leaves us vulnerable to whatever happens and encourages us to simply accept it.

He said we shouldn’t just accept whatever happens, we should determine it.

He urged us to live our lives with courage and purpose and not to accept whatever will be, will be. Instead, we should each be the master of our own fate.
