6,000 gallons of sewage leaks in Kalaeloa

A private contractor working on Coral Sea Road in Kalaeloa drilled into a 16-inch sewer force main, resulting in a sewage leak Thursday morning, according to the Kalaeloa Water Co.

Company officials said an estimated 6,000 gallons of sewage leaked but no wastewater went into any drainage facilities or into the ocean.

KWC technicians were on-site within 15 minutes to contain the leak and begin repairs.

While repairs were being made, customers were asked to conserve water.

KWC completed its purchase in November 2017 of the Barbers Point water and wastewater system from the Navy and began full-time operations and maintenance.

The system was installed beginning in the 1940s and continued through the 1990s until Naval Air Station Barbers Point was closed in 1999.
