Diana Ross returning for January concert

It took more than 50 years into her career for legendary diva Diana Ross to make her Hawaii debut in 2015. She’s not waiting nearly that long to return.

Promoter Rick Bartalini Presents announced this morning that Ross will bring her Endless Memories Tour to the Blaisdell Arena on Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. — 31 months to the day since she made her Hawaii debut at that same arena, on June 12, 2015. Ross sold out Oahu shows that night and the next, as well as shows the following two nights on Maui. Only an Oahu show has been scheduled for this visit.

In a release, Ross explained the quick return: “I love Hawaii. I love everything about it and I especially love the people.”

Ross will be honored Sunday with a lifetime achievement award at the American Music Awards (KITV, 7 p.m.). Since her emergence in the 1960s as the lead singer of the Supremes, Ross has sung lead on 18 No. 1 songs, tied for the most in the rock era with Elvis Presley and Mariah Carey.

On her last visit, Ross brought a backing band of 12 and her set included hits from both her solo career — such as “Upside Down” and “Endless Love,” her duet with Lionel Richie — and her time with the Supremes, including “Stop! In the Name of Love” and “Where Did Our Love Go.” A couple of cover songs filled out the lively 105-minute shows, which, as expected, featured multiple costume changes.

Tickets go on sale exclusively to Hawaii residents at 10 a.m. Monday. The kamaaina presale, which has an eight-ticket limit, ends at 10 p.m. on Nov. 23, and sales open to the general public the following morning at 10. Prices range from $45.50 to $255.50 (plus service fees) and will be available at the Blaisdell box office, online at ticketmaster.com and by calling (800) 745-3000.
