I am seeking re-election for the Maui County Council – Molokai District.

One of the founding members of the Molokai Land Trust; one of the founding members of the East Molokai Watershed Project; past board member, Na PuuWai Hawaiian Health System; past chairwoman of the Maui County Fire and Public Safety Commission; past Advisory member of the Hawaii State CBED; past board Member HACBED; past board member Maui County Board of Water Supply.

Anything else you’d like voters to know about you?

For three years I have been the chairwoman of the Housing, Human Services and Transportation Committee. The scope of my committee is to oversee matters related to affordable or workforce housing, social services programs and related grants. And to partner with the Department of Transportation to diversify transportation options.

What makes you qualified to be a Council member?

I have been serving on the Maui County Council for three fulfilling years and I am seeking re-election. My experience with community advocacy allows me the partner and collaborate to pursue policies to serve my constituents. I understand and hear the voices of our communities. Listening to the unique concerns.

What are your top five priorities for the county?

1. Support county’s efforts toward agencies that provide shelter and case management for our homeless community.

2. Pursue support for county to partner with subsidizing offsite infrastructure (i.e., wastewater, transmission of water source, etc).

3. Sustain county employees.

4. Support public safety.

5. Implement Maui’s MPO.

What is your one big idea?

Create policy that will allow affordable housing funds to subsidize (through bonds) development of off site infrastructures.

What do you think about the proposal to go from a mayor/council form of government to a manager/council form?

The proposal deserves more vetting with the public. Without definitive understanding, in my opinion, the council form of government removes the capacity of balance with the executive branch and the legislative branch.

What can the Council do to deal with the economic impact from the end of sugar on Maui?

Partnering with the state and federal government, Council can support funds to Maui’s Office of Economic Development to provide training for displaced employees. I serve on the HC&S Task Force as council member. Partner with businesses and HC&S to extend placement of displace employees.

Affordable housing is in short supply on Maui. How would you suggest increasing the inventory of affordable housing?

The Workforce Policy was amended to allow 25 percent affordable housing first before market homes are built. This change will provide at least 264 affordable units in 2016. Work with state and county utilizing lands to develop affordable homes and rentals.
