“Given the remaining choices, like Bernie Sanders, I will be casting my vote for Hillary Clinton. Moving forward, as a veteran and someone who knows firsthand the cost of war, I am going to continue to push for an end to counterproductive interventionist wars and lead our country toward a path toward peace.”

Tulsi Gabbard

U.S. representative, D-Hawaii

U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard says she will vote for Hillary Clinton for president in November, but was tempered in her support as she reiterated her concerns with the former secretary of state’s Middle East policies.

“Given the remaining choices, like Bernie Sanders, I will be casting my vote for Hillary Clinton,” she said in an interview with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser on Friday. “Moving forward, as a veteran and someone who knows firsthand the cost of war, I am going to continue to push for an end to counterproductive interventionist wars and lead our country toward a path toward peace.”

Gabbard broke with the Democratic establishment in February to endorse Sanders, resigning from her post as a vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee to do so. She became a prominent figure in the Sanders movement, nominating him for president during a speech last week at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

Democratic Party leaders have been trying to rally Sanders supporters behind Clinton in hopes of defeating Republican nominee Donald Trump — a task that has become increasingly challenging in light of recently leaked emails that appear to confirm suspicions that party leadership favored Clinton during the primary. The DNC is supposed to remain impartial during Democratic primaries.

The hacked emails, released by WikiLeaks on the eve of the Democratic National Convention last month, set off a firestorm among Sanders supporters who protested outside the convention hall.

The emails prompted DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to announce her resignation last month. On Tuesday three other top officials at the DNC announced that they too will leave their posts.

Gabbard had been silent throughout the convention about whether she would throw her support to Clinton, even as Sanders was effusive in praising her.

As late as June, when Clinton was already the presumptive party nominee, Gabbard remained reluctant to give her endorsement.

“I am not prepared to do that,” she told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “There are a lot of things that I’m looking at, in particular this issue that she has not moved on at all in this campaign, which is this commitment to continue this interventionist regime change policy in Syria that is proving to be so disastrous.”

As for the resignations of leaders of the Democratic National Committee, Gabbard maintains it’s a good thing. She said she was particularly bothered by an email from chief finance officer Brad Marshall questioning Sanders’ Jewish faith and whether the candidate could lose support in the South if he were to be portrayed as an atheist.

“Religious bigotry like this has no place in the Democratic Party,” Gabbard said. “It’s the kind of thing you’d expect from Donald Trump.”

Many of us find ourselves in this ‘rock and a hard place’ situation with Clinton and Trump. Glad Tulsi had the integrity not to endorse Clinton over Sanders, but like her, I’ll be voting for the “lesser of two evils,” too.

Because Trump is nuts and unfit to be President.

        • OldDiver says:

Tulsi’s convenient short term memory loss is responsible for forgetting Bernie Sanders voted to invade Afghanistan, voted for regime change in Libya, and voted for the 2001Authorization of Use of Military Force which Geroge Bush used to invade Iraq. Gabbard should just stick to the candidate of her real party and vote for Donald Trump.

        • OldDiver says:

What should be of immediate concern is Tusli Gabbard’s pro-NRA assault weapon position.

        • James_M says:

OldDiver why distort the facts? Bernie voted against the war in Iraq. Those are the dishonest Clinton talking points she tried to use in the debates that Sanders crushed. Nothing can hide Clinton’s record of championing the regime change wars in Iraq, Libya, and now Syria to overthrow the Assad government. The problem is Trump is such a wild card no one knows what he’s for or against from one day to the next. All I know is he is a bigot and a loose cannon. Best thing we can do is hold our nose, vote for Clinton and scream bloody murder if she leads us to more regime change war.

        • James_M says:

Old Diver you have your facts wrong again. Tulsi has an “F” rating from the NRA. thedailybeast.thisisyourreponguns.com

        • Rite80 says:

James, you didn’t counter the points OD made on Bernie Sanders votes for aggressive military action in the Middle East.

        • Rite80 says:

Tulsi did not sign a single common sense gun control resolution until her opponent Shay Chan Hodges pointed it out. She has yet to sign the assault weapons ban resolution. Pointing out grades just confuses the discussion.

        • James_M says:

Rite80 – Tulsi has co-sponsored MULTIPLE pieces of gun control legislation since she’s been in office. You can see for yourself: https://www.votetulsi.com/node/25028. It’s sad all Hodges’ supporters do is try to lie about Tulsi’s record.

        • paulokada says:

She is smart. Lots questioned her support for Sanders but now Clinton owes her some points because of Sanders supporter votes.

        • Keonigohan says:

    • James_M says:

It’s unfortunate the choice has come down to Clinton and Trump. Many of use will hold our noses and pull the lever for Clinton. I know Tulsi – and hopefully many others – will continue to fight to get billionaire PAC money out of politics and fight to give regular people a voice in Washington.

    • allie says:

Gabby is right. I appreciate her good sense and honesty. Clearly Trump is not fit to be president. He may even be mentally unstable. Scary.

    • entrkn says:

Choosing which Presidential candidate to vote for in this election is a no-brainer. Anyone with a brain will choose Hillary Clinton and anyone voting for Donald T Rump is a no brainer as Clinton is the only realistic choice. Tulsi Gabbard and Brian Schatz are also obvious choices since they have been well received in Washington and they have both been doing an excellent job for Hawaii.

Millions of trump supporters feel this way about Donald J. Trump…..”We don’t care if the guy swears… or how many times he’s been married…or who he voted for, or what his income tax return shows. We want the problems fixed. Yes he’s an egomaniac, but we don’t care. We know he’s not a racist, or bad to women, or all the other things the liberal media is trying to label him with. We know he’s raised a good family, and that says a lot about him.

The country is a mess because politicians suck, the Republican Party is two faced & gutless, and illegals are everywhere and Muslims are openly trying to hurt this country and make the civilized world adjust to them. We want it all fixed!

We don’t care that Trump is crude, we don’t care that he has changed positions, we don’t care that he fights with Megan Kelly, Rosie O’Donnell, and so many of the elected establishment. We don’t care that Rubio, Cruz, Ryan, the Bush’s, and so many other top old and new Republicans refuse to endorse him for their own selfish reasons, and we know what they are. We don’t care that he doesn’t know the name of some Muslim terrorists, we don’t care that he tried some businesses that didn’t work out.

This country is weak, bankrupt, our enemies are making fun of us, we are being invaded by illegals, we are becoming a nation of victims, where every Tom, Ricardo and Hasid is a special group with special rights to a point where we don’t even recognize the country we were born and raised in, AND WE JUST WANT IT FIXED. And TRUMP is the only guy who seems to understand what the people want.

We’re sick of politicians, sick of the Democratic and Republican Party. We’re angry about the Iran deal, the budget, treatment of Israel, military weakness, lobbyists, special interests, overpaid politicians with their self serving bills and back room deals, trade deals, loss of jobs, manipulated economic numbers, businesses fleeing, and even the phoney pay for play Clinton Foundation.

Americans are no longer going to be fooled, and the movement is out to change the direction we’re taking. Trump may not be a saint, but he doesn’t have lobbyist money holding him, he doesn’t have political correctness restraining him, and all you know is that he has been very successful, a good negotiator, he has built a lot of things, he’s flexible, and he’s also not a politician. And he says he’ll fix it. And we believe him because he is too much of an egotist to be proven wrong or looked at and called a liar.

Public service has become elected greed. This may be our only chance to have a non-politician, despite his flaws, try and correct the mess, at least for 4 years. We must take the shot, because the consequences of putting Hillary Clinton in office are frightening. There is a tidal wave happening, and its going to overcome much of what’s happened to this country.

  2. HOSSANA says:

I am probably the only one making this statement and will take much heat for it BUT I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR TULSI GABBARD for anything. She has proven to me that she is an OPPORTUNIST who wants only to make the headlines but has never, never accomplished anything substantially nor earn the right for any higher position except endorsing political names that make the headlines and, yes, go against the grain, like endorsing Sanders etc….Whatever the case, she can dupe all of the people but wil never get my vote as she is only concerned about one thing and that’s to make a name for herself and get elected to higher office w/o accomplishing or putting in the time to achieve something worthwhile for our State etc…..Big deal she served in Afghanistan…….The biggest problems are with our veterans but does she get involved with VA in helping our veterans….she knows the complexity of the problems but stays clear of difficult issues and, like I said earlier, just want to be an OPPORTUNIST and get her name in PRINT where people will know who she is when she runs for higher office w/o accomplishing NOTHING.

    • hanamauka says:

Me too, I won’t be voting for her in any election.

    • Tita Girl says:

I view her as a fake dem. Just like her father. Must be genetic.

    • James_M says:

It’s the opposite of what you are saying. Tulsi resigned her position with the powerful DNC (which was totally in cahoots with the rich, powerful, established front runner Hillary Clinton) to endorse a man of integrity who had little to no chance of winning. She obviously endorsed the man of integrity because she is a person of integrity. She now has a political “x” on her back from the Clinton political machine. And to demean her service as a veteran is to demean the service of all veterans. Tulsi is co-chair of the bi-partisan veterans caucus, has worked hard to pass multiple pieces of legislation for veterans and has fought for hundreds of millions of dollars of funding for veterans’ issues. My friend wouldn’t have been able to get a home loan if it weren’t for Tulsi having cut through the red tape that was blocking vets from their VA benefits.

    • peanutgallery says:

You’ve just deserved every politician out there. Folks are fed-up. Tired of being overcharged, overtaxed, and lied to over, and over again. Obama does it with total distain for the American people. It’s why they are trying so hard to take away 2nd amendment rights. We have come to a crossroads where casting off the yoke of oppression has real meaning.

    • shanik says:

      100% agree!

    • poipoo says:

Wow hyperbole much? Tulsi not only represents Hawaii with aloha on the national stage, she’s been working hard for Hawaii, for veterans, for education, for conservation, for defense, etc. She’s worked to get grant money for the homeless, Veterans, preschools, etc. but don’t rely on local news to get the lowdown.
Just a quick search for ‘veterans’ on her website turned up plenty of info. http://gabbard.house.gov/index.php/search?searchword=veterans&searchphrase=all
      A search for “grants” http://gabbard.house.gov/index.php/search?searchword=grants&searchphrase=all

    • Salonpasgranny says:

Ditto! Don’t know what the fuss is about Tulsi! She probably got in Congress with her “good” looks but nothing else! She only does things to attract attention…never served her full term in any political office except this time. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer constantly refers to her for military remarks but listen closely, it’s all BS! She’s an opportunist like Schatz and DOES NOT vote and support legislation for Hawaii…it’s for themselves and how often they can get their names in the media. Wake up Hawaii!

  3. noheawilli says:

This is an insane election as the 2 parties have failed us and there is a very good option. Under the Libertarian ticket there are 2 experienced candidates who have shown integrity and honesty which are two of the weakest attributes of clint trump.
How can anyone while opposed to trump think that this somehow makes clinton look good in any way? Gary Johnson is heads and shoulders above either of those 2.

In case you all missed this here it is again… Clinton Cash delves into how Bill and Hillary Clinton went from being self-admittedly “dead broke” after leaving the White House to building a personal fortune worth of over $150 million — with over $2 billion in donations coming into their foundation.
Not coincidentally, this newfound wealth was accumulated while Mrs. Clinton was operating as the U.S. Secretary of State. It was primarily gained through lucrative speaking fees and contracts paid for by foreign companies and Clinton Foundation donors – as well as numerous foreign governments with a vested interest in activities the State Department regulates and oversees.

      • retire says:

They may understand the cost, but they don’t understand the concept of victory if they’ve served since Vietnam. Our leaders don’t know how to fight wars anymore, the concept of victory is foreign to them. Military service that has achieved nothing does not merit bragging rights.

She has also been endorsed by Democrats of America, Human Rights Campaign, PlannedParenthood, Emily’s List, Sierra Club, EqualityHawaii, VoteVets, Ocean Champions and other progressive organizations because of her progressive stands.

FDR, with his “New Deal,” was accused of being a Socialist, too — but the term is ‘democratic socialism.’ FDR signed the “Social Security Act” as part of the New Deal, and it is a ‘socialist’ program. Garrans you have one Social Security card, making you a card-carrying ‘socialist.’

      • 64hoo says:

you are in denial I got it right from the dictionary of what socialism means, look it up yourself.

        • poipoo says:

The point is that Bernie’s a democratic socialist like FDR.

Go to his website and read it for yourself.
          https://berniesanders.com/democratic-socialism-in-the-united-states/

“In his inaugural remarks in January 1937, in the midst of the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt looked out at the nation and this is what he saw.

He saw tens of millions of its citizens denied the basic necessities of life.

He saw millions of families trying to live on incomes so meager that the pall of family disaster hung over them day by day.

He saw millions denied education, recreation, and the opportunity to better their lot and the lot of their children.

He saw millions lacking the means to buy the products they needed and by their poverty and lack of disposable income denying employment to many other millions.

          He saw one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished.

And he acted. Against the ferocious opposition of the ruling class of his day, people he called economic royalists, Roosevelt implemented a series of programs that put millions of people back to work, took them out of poverty and restored their faith in government. He redefined the relationship of the federal government to the people of our country. He combatted cynicism, fear and despair. He reinvigorated democracy. He transformed the country.

And that is what we have to do today.

And, by the way, almost everything he proposed was called “socialist.” Social Security, which transformed life for the elderly in this country was “socialist.” The concept of the “minimum wage” was seen as a radical intrusion into the marketplace and was described as “socialist.” Unemployment insurance, abolishing child labor, the 40-hour work week, collective bargaining, strong banking regulations, deposit insurance, and job programs that put millions of people to work were all described, in one way or another, as “socialist.” Yet, these programs have become the fabric of our nation and the foundation of the middle class.”

      • 64hoo says:

stop making excuses for sanders he is a person who is a communist and wants communist agendas in this country, you can see it. so you like him, good that means you love communism and you want to live in a communist country, just like tulsi and all the other sanders supporters.

        • 64hoo says:

also why don’t you look up communism, you will find that the demented Dictator deceiver and chief in the white house, the stalin housekeeping hag and barry seltzer all want the same thing for us to become a communist country. that’s there agenda and any followers of them.

        • poipoo says:

Why don’t you look up FDR and the New Deal? That’s what Bernie’s platform was, adjusted for the times we live in.

Would not hurt if Clinton stresses transparency and accountability. Weave that into her presentations, in plain simple language, as to how her administration will support voters in key states such as Ohio, Florida, etc.

Honestly, she can come across as trying too hard to be politically correct every time, all the time. Ioho, it sometimes looks that way, especially during recent questions posed to her regarding her email issue.

Perhaps that is the product of being in a hostile political environment, where she is constantly attacked. She is, after all, only human. But when she is relaxed and speaking from the heart, she does and will connect with voters.

    • nomu1001 says:

And, ioho, she might be better off simply stating that her mistakes such as using a private email server will not ever happen again, and she will make sure that her administration makes transparency and accountability a top priority.

Why does the readers of this article think Tulsi’s endorsement of Clinton needs their unsolicited comments? Especially when some are down right rude and uncalled for!

    • 64hoo says:

I guess your right about that, those that back Tulsi the deceiver and chief, the Stalin housekeeping hag and the seltzer are down right rude and uncalled for. my comment is truthful, Wazdat is truthful and others who can see what happening to this country, slowly turning into communist.

She has legitimate concerns about regime change policy in Syria. However, as many know, there are many diverse people and respective religions in the Middle East which makes compromises with any particular faction tenuous, at best.

The humanitarian issues, along with so many other concerns which we cannot say we understand and truly appreciate, are heart wrenching and at the same time, looks to be creating so much divisiveness in many European nations. Many simply cannot understand how a leader of a country can kill and mistreat so many of its own. And that may just be the problem…we cannot understand or appreciate what is happening in Syria.

According to a recently released news article, the “..White House is now pushing a plan for the United States to cooperate with the Russian military in Syria, sharing intelligence and coordinating airstrikes against the Islamic State and the Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front. In return, Russia would force the government of Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, to stop using barrel bombs and air attacks in areas in which neither extremist group is present.”

We would like to hear from Tulsi regarding this proposed position. Perhaps we will hear more from her on CNN.

I had respect for Sanders and Gabbard even if I dont agree with socialism. But now I find them both to be sellouts, endosing Clinton to stay in party lines when Clinton is so opposite of what they stand for, and her being a liar and a criminal. Not that Trump is much better, but they could have endorsed an independent, whether it be Johnson or had someone else put up there.
