What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine itself isn’t new — the first bone marrow and solid-organ transplants were done decades ago. But advances in developmental and cell biology, immunology, and other fields have unlocked new opportunities to refine existing regenerative therapies and develop novel ones
Musculoskeletal degeneration and complications from injuries are becoming more prevalent as the population lives longer and participates in rigorous athletic and recreational activities. These tissue defects may immobilize patients, as well as cause inflammation and pain.
What is PRP?
PRP is produced from person’s own blood. It is a concentration of one type of cells, known as platelets, which circulate through the blood and are critical for blood clotting. Platelets and the liquid plasma portion of the blood contain many factors that are essential for the cell recruitment, multiplication and specialization that are required for healing.
After a blood sample is obtained from a patient, the blood is put into a centrifuge, which is a tool that separates the blood into its many components. Platelet rich plasma can then be collected and treated before it is delivered to an injured area of bone or soft tissue, such as a tendon or ligament.
PRP is given to patients through an injection, and ultrasound guidance can assist in the precise placement of PRP. After the injection, a patient must avoid exercise for a short period of time before beginning a rehabilitation exercise program.
What is stem cell therapy?
Stem cell therapy is the use of stem cells to treat or prevent a disease or condition
It is important to understand that while stem cell therapy may help alleviate symptoms each patient and disease process is unique, it may not work for all patients and some may require additional treatments. Consequently, Portner Orthopedic Rehabilitation can neither predict nor guarantee short term or long term results.
Adipose tissue (fat) is extracted by gentle liposuction and is then processed through the process known as Adipose Concentration System. Once cells are separated they are then administered directly into the joint or tendon under ultrasound guidance. The treatment typically takes sixty minutes to complete.
Stem Cells can be obtained from adult tissue and are most commonly found in fat and bone marrow. These are the repair cells for the body’s organs and tissue. Stem Cells can regenerate, divide and create more stem cells. They can also, mature or differentiate into specialized cells that perform a specific function, such as, cartilage, tendon, or ligament.
