Choose a roofing contractor carefully, industry veteran advises
A roof is only as good as the installation. Choosing a licensed, bonded, insured roofing contractor to install a new roof or re-roof is critical, regardless of the material being used, saId Charlie Beeck, President of Tropical Roofing and Raingutters and former President of the Hawaii Roofing Contractors Association (HRCA).
Beeck’s company, in business for more than two decades, has received two Honolulu Star-Advertiser “Hawaii’s Best” First Place awards and was named “Remodeler of Year” by the Building Industry Association.
The company installs and repairs all types of roofing on homes, townhouses, and commercial buildings, including composition shingle, wood shingle and shake, steel and aluminum standing seam, tile, and elastomeric coatings.
Tropical’s raingutter services include on-site fabrication, repairs, cleaning, and designing and building raingutter systems.
“A poorly installed roof will eventually leak and shingles may blow off in high winds,” Beeck said. “During my years serving on the HRCA Board and chairing its Ethics Committee, we heard many complaints from the public regarding shoddy work and unethical practices. It’s also common for unlicensed contractors to go out of business in the middle of a job. The consumer at that point has little recourse. Before signing a contract or making payments, it’s always wise to check on the roofer’s credentials with HRCA or the Building Industry Association.

Beeck noted that the roofing industry is addressing consumer concerns about energy conservation with new technologies and products. One of the most energy-efficient products available is Solaris, a solar reflective composition shingle that can reduce a roof’s temperature by as much as 20%.
Tropical Roofing and Raingutters offers a variety of roofing options for both new construction and re-roofing and provides free on-site estimates. Currently the company is offering a $1,000 discount and a free solar attic fan with a new roof installation.
