A new $11.8 million, 228-stall campus parking structure for the Saint Louis School and Chaminade University shared campus is now targeted to be completed by mid-spring 2013.
The facility is being funded from a gift of more than $18 million that has been committed to the two schools from 2008 to 2015 from the Marianist Center of Hawai‘i and the Marianist Province of the United States.
"There was parking available on campus but there wasn’t a specifically designed parking structure," Chaminade spokeswoman Kapono Ryan said. "We thought it would be ready sooner, but there were challenges with gravel and rock and it’s taking a little longer than we thought. So it will be ready by the middle of spring (2013) instead of the beginning of spring."
Saint Louis and Chaminade celebrated their Marianist heritage Wednesday by recognizing the economic and spiritual commitment being made by the Marianist Center of Hawai‘i and the Marianist Province of the United States.
The Society of Mary — the Marianists — is a Catholic religious order dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. It was founded in France in 1817 by Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, who was dedicated to re-establishing a renewed Christian faith in the aftermath of the French Revolution.
"The financial support received from the Marianist Center of Hawaii and the Marianist Province of the United States help ensure that our institutions can continue to educate our students with excellence," said Chaminade University President Brother Bernard Ploeger.
"We are filled with gratitude at their generosity and their confidence in us."
Besides the $11.8 million earmarked for the parking structure, an additional $5.8 million will be used for storm drainage and other property improvements on the 52-acre shared campus.
And from 2008 through 2015, the Marianist Province of the United States will have provided approximately $800,000 to benefit students of both Saint Louis and Chaminade. Of that amount, the province will have granted $625,000 to Chaminade’s Marianist Sponsorship Ministries Foundation, which supports Marianist and Catholic religious traditions at the university, including student immersion programs, partnerships with Hawaii’s Catholic schools and the Diocese of Honolulu, and campus religious and social celebrations.
The remaining amount will come from $138,000 in scholarships for students attending Saint Louis School.
Previously, from 2006 to 2008, Marianist Center of Hawaii also funded $1.4 million for other needed infrastructure improvements. That amount was not included in the $18 million-plus figure.
"We are grateful to our Marianist sponsors and affirm our Marianist/Catholic heritage," said Saint Louis School President Walter S. Kirimitsu. "The Marianists continue to impart a positive influence on the entire community of Saint Louis, and the Marianist Center of Hawai‘i blesses us with a campus of great beauty and function."
