So, what did the Kapolei and Mililani boys soccer teams learn after playing to a scoreless tie at Mililani on Friday night?

"If anything, we learned that these are two excellent teams," Mililani coach Jeff Yamamoto said. "We knew that, of course, but if there was any doubt, there shouldn’t be tonight."

Mililani and Kapolei both dropped to 2-0-1 with the draw, and showed off defenses that they hope will only get better. The Hurricanes came into the game averaging 9.0 goals per game to Mililani’s 4.5 but could never get anything going.

"There are things we thought we were good at that we didn’t show tonight," Kapolei coach Ryan Lau said. "We learned that with two excellent teams it is going to be tough to score. Both teams played well in the back."

Kapolei’s defense started with senior Max Wren and ended with keeper Aldo Ramirez. With Mililani’s defense limiting chances for Keo Ponce, Wren and Ramirez got their team into transition consistently.

Kapolei had four golden chances when Wren earned throw-ins from deep in Mililani territory and put the ball on the goal each time. The Trojans bailed out keeper Robin Potts each time.

Kapolei’s Ramirez had just as interesting a time, straying 25 yards away from the goal to attack any ball that crossed midfield. It almost cost him a goal when he drilled the ball into Mililani’s Preston Derige from close range and hit him so hard that the ball rebounded 20 yards behind Ramirez and nearly into the goal. It was high enough that he was able to track it down before it counted.

"(Ramirez) did everything we wanted him to do," Lau said. "We like to get him involved in transition because he is such an athlete. He did a great job."

Kapolei captains Ponce and Dylan Orian got yellow cards in the heated match, and Matthew Fronda got one for Mililani.

"It’s early," Yamamoto said. "We will see these guys again, there is no doubt."

Mililani visits Waipahu on Tuesday, while Kapolei visits Campbell.

In the girls match, Mililani (4-0-1) remained unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Kapolei (4-1).

The Trojans pressed the advantage throughout, and it paid off when freshman Kailana Kaeo beat Kapolei keeper Arielle Stoyanow high and right off an assist from Mia Crail-Yusif.

It was the first goal allowed by Kapolei this season, and Mililani has yet to be scored upon. Nicole Nishiki got the shutout for Mililani, the fourth keeper to put a zero on the scoreboard for the team. Mililani’s top two keepers will be out for a month with concussions.
