Banyan falls prey to mysterious pest

Arborist Abner Undan peeled bark from a dilapidated branch of a weeping banyan tree Friday at Moana­lua Gardens. This particular tree is around 80 years old and was first observed with the highly degenerative lobate lac scale pest in September.

Moanalua Gardens owner John Philip Damon on Friday demonstrated the brittleness of a branch from a diseased weeping banyan tree at Moana­lua Gardens. The banyan, which is infected with the lobate lac scale pest, will be removed because “75 percent of the tree is dead,” he said.
