A visitor from Idaho was injured in an apparent fall while hiking in Makamakaole Gulch in Kahakuloa on Friday.
Fire rescue personnel responding to the 3:03 p.m. emergency call were told by hikers in the area that the injured man was roughly 45 minutes from the highway. A helicopter was called in for support.
The injured hiker and another man were found about a mile from Kahekili Highway, near the base of a 90-foot waterfall, and were airlifted to safety.
According to the Maui Police Department, the hiker suffered a head injury after losing his footing on slippery rocks and falling an undetermined distance off the trail. He was treated by paramedics and transferred to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
Restroom repairs allow Kailua-Kona park to reopen
Kahaluu Beach Park in Kailua-Kona reopened Friday afternoon with the completion of plumbing repairs and maintenance.
The park was closed on Feb. 24 following a sewage spill from the park restroom. Repairs had been underway ever since, with an eye toward ensuring that water quality at the site met state Department of Health standards.
