City moves to plan controversial Ala Wai footbridge

Not everyone is pleased with the city’s decision to move ahead with a pedestrian and bike bridge across the Ala Wai. Linda Wong of the Diamond Head-Kapahulu- St. Louis Heights Neighborhood Board said surrounding residents are concerned their traffic will increase when Waikiki bridge users park in their neighborhoods. Others fear that one bridge will lead to more, ruining views of the Ala Wai.

The city is acting on plans to build a footbridge over the Ala Wai Canal aligning with University Avenue and Kalaimoku Street, above. The city says the bridge will help reduce vehicle traffic and parking conflicts in Waikiki and other areas.
