The Polynesian Voyaging Society’s Hokule‘a, which departed Hawaii’s waters three years ago this month for an around-the-world journey focused on conservation and sustainability issues, is now headed home.
The traditional Polynesian sailing canoe replica is slated to arrive at Ala Moana’s Magic Island at 8:30 a.m. June 17, with an arrival ceremony at 10 a.m. followed by a homecoming celebration. A three-day Malama Honua (“Care for the Earth”) fair and summit, which is set to get underway June 18 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center, is expected to include canoe tours, educational exhibits and event speakers such as Nainoa Thompson, the voyaging society’s president.
More than 250 crew members have participated in the 36-month trip, with monthly crew changes. The vessel departed Tahiti Wednesday before sunset. Safe travels, Hokule‘a.
