I’d seen this kiwi peeler/slicer while hunting for gadgets online but didn’t think much of it until I saw it at Don Quijote on Kaheka Street. At a price of $9.99, I figured it was worth giving this tool a try.
How it works: Cut a kiwi in half using the serrated plastic knife conveniently stored in the device. Then, over a plate or bowl, hold a kiwi half in one hand, cut side up, and push the wire prongs into the flesh. Turn the device so the stainless-steel wires move in a circular motion, separating the fruit from its skin. Empty the quartered pieces into the dish.
Does it work? Pretty much.
Pros: Way faster than peeling a kiwi, as I usually do. The fruit comes out in bite-size pieces. Compact, and easy to wash and store.
Cons: A little messy because the juice gets all over your hand. If the kiwi isn’t ripe, it’s a bit difficult to turn the device in the hard flesh, and some of the skin will stick to the pieces of fruit (although it’s easy to remove). Depending on the size of the kiwi, the wires could cut through the skin. Some of the fruit is wasted. If you want pretty slices of kiwi, this device won’t deliver.
Cost and availability: Prices vary online from $6 to $8.99, plus shipping charges (just Google “kiwi slicer” or “kiwi cutter”). And some don’t include the plastic knife. At the Kaheka Don Quijote, it was hanging in the kitchen aisle with the other gadgets.
Worth it? Yes.
