Lucky, lucky Mavis L. Wanczyk. She’s the Massachusetts hospital worker who just won the biggest undivided lottery jackpot in U.S. history — a whopping $758.7 million. The 53-year-old mother of two adult children chose to take a lump-sum payment of $480 million, or $336 million after taxes, rather than take a gradual payout that would’ve yielded more money but spread out over several decades.
News of mega lottery winners tend to get folks in Hawaii talking about legalizing gambling here to raise revenues — but so far, all the decades of talk have gotten nowhere. But with mega costs for rail and other payments looming large, hey, who knows?
