Goro Arakawa holds a replica of the Statue of Liberty. He proposed to his late wife, Mary, on the Staten Island Ferry in 1953, saying to her, “There’s the Statue of Liberty, the symbol of our nation’s freedom … and here goes mine.”

From 1958 to 1962 the skies of Hawaii were lit up by a nuclear tests high in the atmosphere above Johnston Island from nuclear tests 700 miles away. Earl Arakaki remembers seeing a bright greenish-blue flash that lasted for a few minutes and then turned red.
