A career night for Emily Maglio wasn’t enough to lift Hawaii over Cal Poly on Saturday, but it was enough for the senior middle to earn a weekly volleyball honor from the Big West on Monday.
Maglio was named the defensive player of the week after a career-high 10 blocks against both Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara, and came within a kill of having a double-double in both. She had nine kills in Friday’s sweep of the Gauchos, hitting .364, and then added 11 kills in the five-set loss to the Mustangs for her first career double-double.
The Canadian national had six solo blocks combined, including a career-high four against Cal Poly. Monday’s honor was the third of Maglio’s career.
She continues to lead the conference in total blocks (96), solo blocks (16) and blocks per set (1.48). Her total blocks rank her at No. 15 in the NCAA and her blocks-per-set average ranks her at No. 19.
Also on Monday, Hawaii dropped to a program-low 51 in the Ratings Percentage Index, the computer-generated ranking system used to determine a team’s strength of schedule. The Rainbow Wahine opponents ranked above them are: Utah (9), UCLA (26), BYU (19), Baylor (23), Cal Poly (25), San Diego (27) and Marquette (32). All of those teams defeated UH in five sets except USD (the Toreros won 3-0) and Baylor (a 3-2 victory over the Bears).
Hawaii (11-6, 5-1 Big West) heads out on the road for matches at Long Beach State (5-14, 2-4) on Friday and Cal State Northridge (10-8, 4-2) on Saturday.
Also on Monday, Cal Poly was ranked for the first time since 2008 in the AVCA Coaches Division I Top 25. The Mustangs (16-2, 6-0), at 26th last week, moved up to No. 24.
