Kids can learn about one of Hawaii’s tropical plants in a memorable way at Finding Fairies and Heroes in Nature, Oct. 8 at Wahiawa Botanical Garden.

The monthly class introduces a new plant — the “Rainbow Tree” in October — in the form of a fairy or hero, hence the class name.

After taking a garden tour, children will receive a laminated page featuring the new character, who will have the personality and clothing representing the highlighted plant, along with positive attributes for kids to emulate. That storytime is followed by a nature craft activity.

“It’s a fun way to get kids outside and see nature in a new way,” said the class instructor, an artist and author known as Alicia With Little Salt.

“If enough kids come to the class, then I have a musical game to help the kids remember what they learned about,” she said. “There is also a photo booth (where) they can have their picture taken as a fairy or hero.”
