Sky Ogata rushed for 195 yards and four touchdowns and added two more scores through the air, Mitchell Camacho added 151 yards rushing and a score, and Roosevelt blew out Pearl City 49-14 in a critical matchup with playoff implications.
“The kids knew we had to have that mind-set,” Roosevelt coach Kui Kahooilihala said. “They knew it was an important game against Pearl City.”
In the first half, Ogata put the Roosevelt offense on his back. In the opening quarter, he accounting for 56 rushing yards and two scores, then exploded for 115 yards and another score in the second.
After Ogata tossed a 66-yard scoring pass to Kirk Calinao in the second, he broke loose for a 60-yard run. Camacho tacked on an 80-yard score, and Roosevelt was firmly in control.
Roosevelt tallied 28 unanswered points after Pearl City scored early in the second quarter. In the first half, Roosevelt rushed for 254 yards. Pearl City managed 103 yards of total offense in the half.
Coming out of the half, the Chargers tried to find a spark, attempting and recovering an onside kick. While that drive came up empty, the Chargers got a break when they forced a fumble by Ogata at his own 10. A few plays later, Christian Tielu punched it in from 1 yard out, finally ending Roosevelt’s streak.
But after a quiet third quarter, Ogata capped his night with an 83-yard touchdown run for his final score of the night.
“We wanted Sky to take command of the offense,” Kahooilihala said. “We had many talks with him this week about what we wanted him to do. We told him to take control, and go put points on the board for us.”
With the win, Roosevelt (8-1, 6-1 OIA D-II) knocks Pearl City (6-3, 5-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten in Division II. With one game left to go for both teams, Roosevelt now controls its own destiny.
“They came into practice and had a great week, and we knew that they wanted this game real bad, and had to have it, Kahooilihala said. “But there’s one more game to go. It’s not over yet. We have to go have another great week in practice, and have the boys finish the job.”
