Applications are being accepted for the Duke Kahanamoku Scholarship Program, which offers need-based scholarships up to $25,000 to young Hawaii residents who participate in a sport that is associated with Hawaii’s first Olympian.
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate financial need, be involved in community service, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have a record of leadership and accomplishment, and participate in outrigger paddling, surfing, kayaking, swimming, water polo or volleyball. Applications are available online at DukeFoundation.org.
Among the scholarships is the inaugural “Duke Award” of $25,000, which recognizes a Hawaii high school senior who best exemplifies the character and values of Kahanamoku. Students must submit a nomination from a school official, either athletic director, coach, counselor or principal.
General scholarships up to $7,500 will be awarded to high school seniors or full-time undergraduate students attending an accredited college. All scholarships are awarded through the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.
Award recipients will be announced at the inaugural Duke’s Night on Feb. 23 at Diamond Head Theater. The event includes a benefit concert with proceeds given to future scholarships.

Scheive leads Chaminade past Anchorage
Erik Scheive had a team-high 19 points and added six rebounds, helping lead Chaminade to a 71-62 win over Alaska Anchorage to win the PacWest/GNAC Challenge at McCabe Gym.
Chaminade finished the tournament at 2-0. The loss was Alaska Anchorage’s first of the year and dropped the Seawolves to 3-1.
Grant Dressler added 14 points and six boards for the ’Swords. Tyler Brimhall led the Seawolves with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

HPU women fall at UC San Diego
UC San Diego forward Mikayla Williams scored 36 points on 14-for-21 shooting to lead the Tritons to a 76-64 win over the Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team on Saturday in San Marcos, Calif.
HPU sophomore Alysha Marcucci led the Sharks (0-2) with 25 points. Lauren Hippolite added 12 points and Samantha Lambrigtsen finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Silverswords extend record win total
Alana Handy hammered a match-high 18 kills and Chaminade closed the regular season with a 25-20, 17-25, 25-13, 17-25, 15-9 win over Hawaii Hilo on Saturday at McCabe Gym.
Chaminade closed the regular season at 23-5 overall and 17-5 in PacWest play and set a program record for wins in a season. Emma Tecklenburg finished with 16 kills and Brooke Bell added 15 in the Silverswords’ win over the Vulcans (21-7, 17-5). Bria Beale led UH Hilo with 14 kills.
The ’Swords now await the NCAA Division II selection show today at 5 p.m. The top eight in the West Region advance. Chaminade was ranked seventh in the latest rankings.
