Highway blues for Haleiwa farmers market
A new venue in the Haleiwa area is needed by the end of this month to avoid stoppage of a popular farmers market. The farmers have been marketing their goods at the junction of Kamehameha Highway and Joseph P. Leong Highway on the Waimea side of Haleiwa, but the state Department of Transportation and the state Attorney General’s Office have reminded them that’s not what highways are for.
The Sunday event has been attracting 2,500 shoppers since beginning three years ago, and the Abercrombie administration has promised to assist the search for another spot. Owners are looking for a location of at least 40,000 square feet. Let’s hope they find a good one.
Hawaii welcomes back women’s pro golf
The LPGA returns to Hawaii this week with the Lotte Championship at Ko Olina Golf Club, and the seasoned pros of the Champions Tour will return to Hawaii in September.
Hawaii was host to three LPGA Tour events in 2008 but the fairways have been empty of competing pro women since then. The Lotte tournament will be a welcome return, to be followed by the Champions event at Pacific Links’ Kapolei course this year and next, then moving to Makaha West, also a Pacific Links course being renovated by Greg Norman. The Champion Tour’s Mitsubushi Electric Championship will return to Hualalai next January with a three-year contract.
