“Cella,” the Latin word for the internal part of a temple that houses a hidden image of a god, is also the title of the large suspended sculpture on display at the University of Hawaii Art Gallery. The word and the artwork beg many questions.

Artist Phoebe Cummings stuffed clusters of unfired clay into wire mesh to build “Cella.” Cummings’ on-site works incorporate the changeability and disintegration of her materials. Her previous artworks included the use of flowers and foliage.
