Fish-printing art demonstration set
Local gyotaku artist Naoki Hayashi will demonstrate fish printing at the Reyn Spooner store at Ala Moana Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Hayashi is an avid diver and fisherman who has turned his gyotaku art into shirt prints for Reyn Spooner.
Naoki’s team will demonstrate the gyotaku process, which involves coating one side of a raw, whole fish with paint, then placing a sheet of paper or fabric over the fish and rubbing it to create an image. Fishermen in mid-19th-century Japan used gyotaku to record their catches.
A drawing will be held for a chance to win one of Naoki’s original pieces, and gyotaku T-shirts, at $24 for kids’ T’s and $28 for adults’, will be available for sale.
Group to present awards, shows
The New York-based Lawrence Blake Group has turned its attention on Hawaii and is presenting two fashion events in Chinatown this week. First up, winners of the 2013 Fashion Front Awards will be announced at 8 p.m. today at thirtyninehotel, recognizing individuals in such categories as Outstanding Artistry in Makeup, Outstanding Hair Salon, Fashion Retailer of the Year and Hawaii Fashion Ambassador.

The group will present runway shows by eight fashion students and recent graduates during the Honolulu Fashion Invitational, taking place 6 p.m. Friday at The FIX Sports Lounge and Nightclub at 80 S. Pauahi St. There will also be an art exhibition of work by emerging Hawaii artists.
Moiliili thrift store has bon dance gear
Whether you’re a seasoned Obon dancer or simply would like to dress for the occasion, the Moiliili Community Center’s Hidden Treasures Thrift Store is offering cotton bon dance kimonos and silk kimonos and obi in time for bon dance season.
The clothing is on sale until sold out, or through the end of July. Other featured sale items include T-shirts for $1 today through Saturday, and Father’s Day items from Tuesday through June 15.
The shop, at 2535 S. King St., is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
Jewelry trunk show lasts through Sunday
Jewelry designs by Jamie Wolf will be shown during a trunk show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Sunday at Neiman Marcus. Jewelry making was a hobby for the New York City Ballet dancer, who left the company after 10 years to focus on her designs.
Her classical, feminine and luxurious collection has won over A-listers such as Anne Hathaway, Cameron Diaz, Halle Berry, Emma Stone, Jessica Alba and Jessica Biel. Wolf also created a custom engagement ring for Oscar winner Natalie Portman after they worked together in "Black Swan."
Also at Neiman Marcus, "Camp Gorgeous" continues through Sunday, with beauty specialists sharing new summer skin care and cosmetic products and fragrances. A minimum purchase of $85 will be rewarded with a striped summer tote and product samples.
