A man who died Thursday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting has been identified as B.J. Medeiros, 36, of Keaau.

An autopsy conducted Friday determined that he died from a gunshot wound to his torso.

In response to a 1:20 p.m. call Thursday reporting a man possibly armed with a weapon, officers searched the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision and found a man on Beach Road off Kaloli Drive sitting in a pickup truck, police said.

Two officers contacted the man and a struggle occurred, police said. During the struggle, the man in the truck pointed a handgun at one of the officers. In response, the officer fired his weapon, fatally injuring the gunman, according to police.

3 small quakes rattle Big Isle

Three small earthquakes rocked Hawaii island late Thursday and Friday, all in the area of Kilauea Volcano.

The first, with a magnitude of 2.5, hit 3.7 miles southwest of Volcano at a depth of 1.9 miles. It happened at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The second, magnitude 2.7, had an epicenter 9 miles southeast of Volcano. It struck at 11:18 a.m. Friday at a depth of 3.3 miles.

The third, magnitude 3, struck at 12:14 p.m. 6 miles southeast of Leilani Estates, in the ocean south of Cape Kumukahi. The depth of the epicenter was 20 miles.

Meanwhile, the so-called 61G lava flow extending southeast of Puu Oo remained active Friday, with the leading edge about a half-mile from the ocean. The lava lake at Halemaumau Crater continued to circulate and intermittently spatter, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
