A 33-year-old Pearl City man was charged Sunday in connection with the death of a man pinned under his car last week in Kalihi.
Brandon Reis of Komo Mai Drive was charged at about 6 p.m. with manslaughter, first-degree terroristic threatening and three firearm offenses. He was being held at the main police cellblock with bail set at $1 million.
Reis is expected to appear in District Court today.
Kyen Knowles, 36, died Wednesday of mechanical asphyxia after he was pinned under his 1991 Lexus sedan on Waterhouse Street between Kopke Street and Gulick Avenue.
Family members said Knowles had gotten into an argument at a fast-food restaurant while picking up food for his kids, and on his way home someone fired a gun at him on Waterhouse Street.
His death certificate reveals that someone shot at Knowles, prompting him to try to get out of the car. Police said the car was still in reverse and struck Knowles, pinning him under a tire. He had no gunshot wound.
Knowles, who lived just two blocks from the scene, is survived by three young children.
Speeding cited in fatal cash near Ko Olina
Excessive speed appears to be a factor in a crash that killed a 35-year-old Waianae man Sunday morning near Ko Olina, police said.
The man was speeding toward Waianae on Farrington Highway at about 2 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle, which traveled up an embankment and hit a tree. The man was pronounced dead at the scene near Aliinui Drive.
He was the 22nd traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared with 27 at this time last year.
Rescued snorkeler in critical condition
A California man remained in critical condition Sunday after he became distressed while snorkeling off Salt Pond Beach in Hanapepe, Kauai.
Bystanders pulled the man to shore at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday and were administering CPR when firefighters arrived on the scene.
According to witness reports, the 55-year-old man was snorkeling in calm water when he began to have difficulty breathing. Firefighters and medics continued CPR as they transported the patient to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, county officials said by email. He was medevaced Saturday to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
Charred drone found at site of Maui fire
Maui firefighters discovered a charred drone aircraft Saturday after extinguishing a small brush fire in West Maui.
Firefighters responded to the Maui Paintball field near mile marker 16 on Honoapiilani Highway at about 9:50 a.m. and found a fire about 1-1/2 acres in size burning at the back of the site, firefighters said. Firefighters extinguished the blaze at about 11:15 a.m.
The fire’s cause was not determined, but firefighters said the charred remnants of a drone aircraft were found near the center of the burned area. Firefighters didn’t know whether the drone was related to the fire.
