Hawaiian Airlines cancels flights

By Star-Advertiser staff

As the East Coast braces for Hurricane Sandy, Hawaiian Airlines has canceled service between Honolulu and New York City through today.

The affected flights are HA 50, which usually departs daily from Honolulu Airport at 3:05 p.m., and HA 51, which usually departs from John F. Kennedy International Airport at 10 a.m.

The airline has scheduled an additional round trip to New York City that will depart Honolulu on Tuesday afternoon as long as the storm clears as expected. Affected passengers will be booked on this flight or other regularly scheduled flights between Honolulu and New York City. Hawaiian said it intends to resume regularly scheduled service Tuesday.

Neighbor island residents scheduled to make connections to Sunday’s flight were re-booked on flights back home and will be flown back to Honolulu at no cost when JFK flights resume. The airline has arranged with Ohana Hotels to provide discounted accommodations on Oahu for passengers connecting to one of the canceled flights from other Hawaiian Airlines flights.

When you expand globally too fast with a small fleet, it stretches the fleet and pilot resources thin. The turn around time for the aircraft is small and when weather conditions deter long stop overs, it deter maximum use of the thin fleet resources. Thus necessitating cancelation of flights from areas with adverse climatic conditions.

Hawaiian cancelled today and rescheduled for tomorrow. Dats two flights to JFK tomorrow if the weather permits. HNL is the home of Hawaiian. All aircraft are rotated thru HNL and Hawaiian somehow found a plane. Heard the big boyz are giving their passengers choices. Stay here but find your own hotel and transportation or get out of our hair, go to the mainland and take your chances there. Hawaiian may be a bit more expensive but they offer residents like me a quality product. As with any other airline, Hawaiian will have disruptions to their schedule and when they do, know how to take care of us residents...credit vouchers, meals, hotel room with transportation and a sincere apology.
