Moment of silence is planned

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

Gov. Neil Abercrombie is asking Hawaii residents to observe a moment of silence today in honor of the 26 killed at a Connecticut school last week.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy asked all states to consider joining in a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. in their respective time zones today.

One week ago, 20 students and six school staff were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Malloy also asked churches and government buildings to ring their bells 26 times to honor the victims.

Abercrombie is encouraging facilities in Hawaii that have the capability to also toll bells.

On Maui, Mayor Alan Arakawa and the organizers of Walk 27 are inviting the public to a 27-minute walk at 4:30 a.m. in remembrance of the victims, set to coincide with the time of the shooting. The walk will take place on the War Memorial Stadium track. The public is invited and asked to wear green and white — the colors of Sandy Hook Elementary — and to bring bubbles to blow.
