Naval Air Station Barbers Point closed in 1999 and is now called Kalaeloa. Large sections of Kalaeloa still are weedy and overgrown with kiawe, with dilapidated, abandoned buildings in scattered areas.

The former base is being considered as an option for housing Marines moving to Hawaii from Okinawa.
