University of Hawaii sports has moved on after nearly a quarter-century, but television station KFVE is hanging on to its "home team" branding and will continue a sports presence, it said.
"We’ll continue to look for interesting events and will certainly look to do more local sports," pledged John Fink, KFVE general manager.
Immediate plans include carrying a selection of Western Athletic Conference and Southeastern Conference football games, Oakland Raiders exhibition games and a Sunday night series called "The Greatest UH Games Ever!"
Oceanic Time Warner Cable took over the UH contract this summer and is scheduled to announce its lineup, including the promised "UH Channel," on Tuesday.
Fink said KFVE is negotiating with the Pac-12 to bring in a sampling of its games this season and is talking to the Pac-West Conference, Hawaii Pacific University and other local Division II schools about carrying some of their events.
As Hawaii High School Athletic Association, Oahu Interscholastic Association and Interscholastic League of Honolulu contracts come open in the next two years, Fink said, "We’ll look at what is available there."
The "Greatest UH Games" series will air 7-9 p.m. on Sundays beginning Sept. 26 and memorable events will be selected from "our vast library of 2,500 UH games," Fink said.
Fink said, "We’re still going to be ‘KFVE the home team’ (because) we’ll still be doing local programming."
