Hawaii and Wichita State did everything possible to get in one final game on Sunday.

The weather just wouldn’t cooperate.

Even with a steady downpour all morning, the game scheduled for an early 12:05 p.m. start wasn’t officially canceled until 20 minutes before the scheduled first pitch.

"It costs a lot of money for teams to come over and we understand that, so we tried to get it in," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "I feel bad about it, but it’s just not smart to play in these conditions."

Both home series scheduled for five games turned into four-game sets due to rain. UH had a game against Gonzaga canceled two weeks ago due to bad weather.

The Rainbows will take a 5-16 record into their inaugural season in the Big West when conference play begins Thursday.

Hawaii will host UC Santa Barbara (12-10) for four games, with the first three counting toward the conference standings.

League members Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly and UC Irvine were all ranked in the top 23 by Collegiate Baseball before its new rankings were due out this morning.

Hawaii has won four of five since starting off 1-15, including a series win against the Shockers (12-11).

Hawaii hit .296 against Wichita State to raise its season batting average 14 points to .232.

Kaeo Alviado hit .462 (6-for-13) with a double, triple and three runs scored, and Conner George, who is on a five-game hitting streak, had eight RBIs against WSU.

Matt Cooper tossed 72⁄3 shutout innings in a 7-0 win on Saturday and has given up only one run in 282⁄3 innings at Les Murakami Stadium this year.

Hawaii outscored Wichita State 22-10 in the series despite getting outhit 41-37.
