Hawaii surfers Malia Manuel and Carissa Moore advanced to the quarterfinals of the Colgate Plax Girls Pro Rio on Friday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Moore dominated each of her heats in 2- to 4-foot waves at Barra Da Tijuca. The Rio Pro is the fifth of seven stops on the women’s World Championship Tour. Moore is the top-ranked surfer after the first four events and is looking to widen her advantage in South America.
"It feels good to move onto quarterfinals," Moore said. "With a beachbreak situation it can be tricky and random so it’s a relief to skip that Round 4."
When competition resumes, Moore will be matched up against Australian Laura Enever in the second quarterfinal.
Manuel will surf in quarterfinal No. 3, against Tyler Wright of Australia. The two split a pair of heat matchups on Friday with Wright edging Manuel in a three-woman heat in Round 1 and Manuel returning the favor in Round 3.
Hawaii’s Coco Ho, Alana Blanchard and Alessa Quizon also competed on Friday. Ho and Quizon made it to Round 4 before being eliminated. Blanchard fell out after Round 2.
