Without much fanfare, Amosa Amosa has built Campbell into an upper-tier OIA football team.

Rich Miano is trying to do the same at Kaiser in his second year and has closed the gap.

Still, the Cougars have some way to go to catch the Sabers, who beat host Kaiser for the second straight year in a rain-soaked 21-7 preseason game on Friday night.

Senior Isaac Hurd accounted for three first-half touchdowns and Campbell held Kaiser to just 1 yard of total offense in the second half to win its third consecutive season opener.

"Two things you can’t control are weather and referees, and tonight we had to deal with the weather," Amosa said. "We’ve seen in the news, read in the paper that Kaiser has got a lot of talent and I looked at us as the underdog, so tonight was very important for us."

Campbell has 14 wins over its past two seasons and showcased a defense ready to improve on that mark.

Kaiser quarterback Kahoalii Karratti, a transfer from Konawaena, was busy in the first half, throwing the ball 22 times.

He attempted just two in the second half as Kaiser ran only 10 plays, turning the ball over twice on fumbles. The Cougars had four turnovers in the game and finished with 119 total yards.

"No disrespect to anyone else, but this is the best football team we’ll play all year long," Miano said. "Our offense seems to be struggling a little bit and we didn’t play well on special teams, but (Campbell) is a great team and was a great test for us to start the season."

Kaiser put forth a much better effort than in last year’s 34-6 loss to Campbell to start the season but couldn’t overcome the turnovers.

The Cougars had just two first downs in the first quarter and punted the ball four times against the wind, giving up field position to the Sabers, who eventually cashed in.

A 24-yard run by Austin May, who had a game-high 93 yards on the ground, set up a 1-yard scramble by Hurd to give the Sabers a 7-0 lead.

Hurd hooked up with senior slotback Kainoa Perry twice in the second quarter for touchdowns, including a 24-yarder following a Kaiser fumble that made it 21-0 Sabers.

"We call Kainoa ‘Mr. Automatic,’ " Hurd said. "He’s one of my best receivers."

Kaiser answered in the final minute as Fitou Fisiiahi bowled over a Campbell defender on his way to a 17-yard touchdown run, making it 21-7 going into halftime.

In addition to playing linebacker, Fisiiahi finished with 33 yards on seven carries but had to leave the game late with a left calf contusion.

"That guy, he plays offense, defense, special teams, he does it all," Miano said. "I wish I had 11 Fitou’s on this team."

Campbell will host Kailua in an interleague game next Friday, while Kaiser opens its OIA White regular season on Saturday, playing host to Kalani.
