Keala Quinlan poured in 22 points and Starr Rivera scored 21 as Roosevelt routed Kaiser 84-33 Wednesday night at the Cougars’ gym.
The matchup was the OIA Red girls basketball season opener for both teams.
Rivera and Sharice Kawakami led a swarming fullcourt press that dominated the Cougars from the opening tip. Kawakami had a team-high four steals to go with 12 points and eight assists.
“Starr hit shots. Sharice hit shots for us. Keala as a big can step out and hit,” coach Hinano Higa said.
“We’re looking for a little bit more contribution from Ashley Kiko.”
Kiko, a sophomore guard, had four points, four assists and four steals.
Rivera did most of her damage in the first half, scoring 17 points as she and Kawakami basically took turns getting steals and feeding each other for open jumpers and threes. Rivera shot 5-for-6 in the second quarter, swishing three treys.
“Our passing was pretty good, getting each other open. Our spacing and cuts were good,” Rivera said.
Quinlan, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, hit two 3-pointers in the opening quarter. She had 10 points before the second quarter began, then added the rest of her points in the second half.
Roosevelt was 6-3 in preseason play. The speed and passing advantages were apparent again on a night when it ran and ran.
“We’ve been playing together since freshman year and we try to put everything we learn from our coach into the game,” Kawakami said. “Every day at practice, we just try to better ourselves.”
They also got a boost from senior Devyn Kauhi, who had five boards and two blocks to strengthen their interior defense.
“We shot the ball well tonight,” Higa said. “We didn’t have a lot of turnovers. Rebounding, that’s always a key for us. Turnovers and rebounding.”
The young Cougars tried to slow the game down to an extent by using a 2-3 zone, but struggled against the fullcourt pressure. They committed 13 of their 25 turnovers in the opening quarter.
Roosevelt’s transition game and patient halfcourt sets took a toll in the second quarter. After Rivera hit her third bomb, Roosevelt led 49-18.
Tavae Sina Sofa added 10 points for the Rough Riders.
In all, they shot 8-for-19 from 3-point range (42 percent) and 34-for-63 from the field (54 percent).
Chantelle Arce had 10 points and Roselyn Shimaoka added nine for Kaiser. Brooke Ho grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Roosevelt doesn’t play again until Tuesday, when Kailua visits.
“We have an exciting season coming up ahead and we’re hoping to take it one game at a time.
“We’re hoping to peak around midseason,” Higa said.
Kaiser’s youth can be an obstacle, but longtime coach Simon Bitanga is optimistic.
“They’re so used to winning, then coming up against a team like this and losing like this, morale can go down. Hopefully, their confidence gets back up,” he said.
