Ioane Kaluhiokalani’s knack for converting on third down helped Waianae stretch its winning streak to three on Friday.
Led by the senior quarterback, the Seariders offense converted on 11 of 12 third-down situations and Waianae rolled to a 43-0 OIA Red win over host Waipahu.
Waianae converted on its first nine third downs in the first half — two going for touchdowns — and the Seariders (4-2) will take a three-game winning streak into next week’s regular-season finale against Kahuku.
Kaluhiokalani converted on third-and-long with runs of 20, 23 and 31 yards in the first half and threw third-down touchdown passes to Stanton Spencer and Justice Jardine and Waianae took a 24-0 lead into halftime.
"Our biggest goal was trying to sustain our blocks and reading it and everything relies on our O-line, basically," Kaluhiokalani said. "Without them we’re not going anywhere."
Waianae ran 39 plays and generated 246 yards in total offense in the first half while the defense held Waipahu without a first down and was on the field for just 14 plays before halftime.
Kaluhiokalani ran for 74 yards, passed for 88 and ended his night with a 2-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
"Their quarterback is the one who triggered most of that," Waipahu coach Eric Keola said. "We had them in third-and-long and he broke the pocket and used his legs to keep on moving the chains."
Even so, Waianae coach Daniel Matsumoto would like to see Kaluhiokalani ease the load on his shoulders at times.
"Sometimes he takes it too much upon himself," Matsumoto said.
Waianae’s longest drive of the night was one of the few that didn’t produce points. The Seariders drove to the Waipahu 5 on their opening possession but lost a fumble.
The defense forced three-and-outs on its first four appearances on the field and Kaluhiokalani completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Spencer to open the scoring and a 6-yarder to Jardine on Waianae’s next possession. John Barbieto capped the next drive with a 5-yard touchdown run and Spencer closed the half with a 37-yard field goal.
Spencer caught his second touchdown pass of the game from Jorell Pontes in the third quarter.
The Seariders now turn their attention to next week’s matchup with Kahuku at Aloha Stadium.
"Kahuku’s a different story," Matsumoto said with a shake of his head. "They’re a tough team. It’s just going to be a different game next week. They’re huge."
