Lower temperatures, in the 60s overnight, should continue through Sunday, National Weather Service forecasters say.
"It is winter out there," said Derek Wroe, a weather service forecaster. "The overnight low is going to be a bit cool for the next several days."
Wroe said a low-pressure system north of the state is bringing cooler winds from the northwest instead of our usual, and slightly warmer, northeast tradewinds.
A cool, dry air mass has settled over the state after a weak storm system passed yesterday. That system brought a few showers to windward areas yesterday.
Another front may bring a few showers, mainly to Maui County and the Big Island, today. There’s also a slight chance of thundershowers.
There’s good news for surfers willing to brave colder waters. A high surf advisory is in effect for north shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island through 6 p.m. tonight. West shores of the Big Island are also under a high surf advisory.
Winds will shift on Sunday from the southwest, warming things up slightly. But that’s because of an approaching front that could bring rain on Monday.
While the overnight low of 64 degrees at the Honolulu Airport may have been chilly, it is far from a record. The record temperature for today is 56 degrees, set in 1971.
