BYU rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to hand the Hawaii softball team a 2-1 loss today in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The loss was Hawaii’s fourth straight and the Wahine closed the nonconference schedule at 22-9. UH opens defense of its Western Athletic Conference title on Friday against Utah State.
BYU (14-14) advanced to the tournament championship game against California.
The Wahine, designated the visiting team for today’s game, took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a home run by Sharla Kliebenstein. The lead held until the sixth when Jessica Fitu singled to right to score Jessica Dugas from second with the tying run. With two out, Carly Duckworth doubled to left field to score Fitu with the go-ahead run.
BYU senior Paige Affleck gave up a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, but retired the next three hitters to eliminate UH from the tournament. Affleck (8-9), who shutout UH on Thursday, struck out six and walked three and earned her third win of the tournament.
UH junior Stephanie Ricketts gave up five hits and struck out 10 and took her third straight loss.

BYU then captured the tournament title with 7-2 upset of No. 9/10 California. Fitu drove in three runs and Affleck earned her second complete-game win of the afternoon. Fitu was named Most Outstanding Player and Affleck was the Most Outstanding Pitcher.
