First glider crash report next week

A National Transportation Safety Board investigator plans to release a preliminary finding by the middle of next week about the crash of a powered glider in waters off northern Kauai.

The crash Tuesday killed Kauai pilot Steve Sprague, 48, of Kalaheo and passenger Ray Foreman, 53, of Vista, Calif.

Board investigator Jim Struhsaker said he interviewed several people and had some time yesterday to examine the wreckage of the aircraft, a P&M Aviation Ltd. Pegasus Quik.

Struhsaker said the wreckage was a “mess” after hitting the water and that it will be a challenge to determine whether anything on the aircraft broke or malfunctioned while it was in the air.

He said he was unable to view information in a camera memory chip and that the chip will be sent to a laboratory to see whether the data can be retrieved.

He said the investigation also recovered a GPS device.

Head injuries killed HPU student

Hawaii Pacific University basketball player Kameron Steinhoff died of head injuries sustained when the skateboard he was riding struck a parked car Monday night in Kaneohe, the city Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Steinhoff died Tuesday night.

Tests registered no drugs or alcohol in his system, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Steinhoff, who turned 21 last month, was a redshirt sophomore this past season with the Sea Warriors.

As a senior at Punahou in 2008, Steinhoff was a consensus state player of the year and led the Buffanblu to a state championship.

Government officials and others will hold a community meeting on disaster preparedness Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pearl Ridge Elementary School cafeteria. Representatives from state and county Civil Defense, the National Weather Service and Hawaiian Electric Co. will explain how to prepare tsunamis, earthquake, hurricanes, floods and other events.
