UH’s Umlauft is academic all-district
University of Hawaii men’s volleyball opposite hitter Jonas Umlauft was selected to the CapitalOne CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII first team in the Men’s At-Large category.
Umlauft, an engineering major with a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average, led the nation in kills (5.57 per set) for the second consecutive year while being named first-team AVCA All-America and first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
"He’s been in the argument for the best player in the country. I think he’s also in the argument for the best student at the university. Athlete, non-athlete. It doesn’t matter. What he’s doing academically is really impressive," coach Charlie Wade said of Umlauft.
The sophomore from Stadtbergen, Germany, is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Umlauft is the third player in the program’s history to be named Academic all-district, joining Dejan Miladinovic (2002) and Costas Theocharidis (2002 and 2003).
The Men’s At-Large category includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Kono falls back at NCAA tourney
Honolulu’s Stephanie Kono fell into a tie for 48th place before play was suspended at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship yesterday in Bryan, Texas.
Kono, a UCLA junior, was 8 over par through 15 holes when the third round was halted by darkness. The Punahou graduate will resume play at 10 over for the tourney.
The Bruins lead the team standings at 13 over, six shots ahead of Purdue. UCLA’s Tiffany Lua holds the individual lead at 5-under-par 142 through 14 holes in the third round. The tournament is scheduled to conclude today.
Isle players start strong in regionals
Kamehameha graduate Hoku Nohara drove in a run and scored twice in New Mexico State’s 9-0 win over Texas Tech yesterday in the Aggies’ opening game of the NCAA softball tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
East Carolina freshman Kristi Oshiro of Mililani went 2-for-3 and scored in the Pirates’ 5-1 win over regional host Maryland. Florida State freshman Courtney Senas, also of Mililani, went 0-for-2 in the Seminoles’ 2-0 loss to UAB.
Western Athletic Conference teams posted two shutouts to open the postseason. Along with NMSU’s five-inning no-hitter against Texas Tech, Fresno State defeated Nebraska 1-0 in 10 innings.
SAT programs offered
In conjunction with a group of more than 20 NFL and major league players, eKnowledge will donate $200 SAT and ACT PowerPrep Programs to local area high school students and their families
In the past two years, more than 600 Hawaii families have ordered the program with a value exceeding $1.2 million.
