MPI’s Carlos is Gatorade’s top player

Keiki Carlos, who led Mid-Pacific to the school’s first state softball title, has been named the Gatorade Softball Player of the Year for Hawaii.

The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and academic achievement and character. Carlos is now a finalist for the Gatorate National Softball Player of the Year award.

Carlos, who maintained a 3.15 GPA, posted a 17-3 record with a 1.11 ERA and 130 strikeouts while also batting .365 with three homers and 19 RBIs. She was named the state tournament’s Most Valuable Player, winning all three games for the Owls.

"Any success that we achieved this season was because Keiki Carlos was on the mound for us," said MPI coach Willie Quinn in a press release. "The fact that our school’s softball program did not experience any success until Carlos entered the program speaks for itself."

Carlos, who will be a senior at MPI, has orally committed to play for the University of Hawaii.

Hawaii boxers at U.S. Championship

Twelve boxers will represent Hawaii at the U.S. Championships, which is being held in Colorado Spring, Colo., today through June 26.

The top four finishers in the male weight classes and the top three in the female classes will qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, to be held in Mobile, Ala., July 30-Aug. 7.

Hawaii’s male boxers are Keola McKee (106 pounds, Wailuku B.C. Maui), Joshua McShane (123, Five-O B.C.), Arnold Dinong (132, Waipahu B.C.), Dahlton Cordeiro-Silva (141, Central Maui B.C.), Boston Salmon (152, unattached), Ricardo Reyes (178, Kawano B.C.), Eric Edwards (201, Waianae B.C.), and Mahiahi Naihe (201 over, Kauai PAL B.C.). The female boxers are Lisa Ha (106, Kawano B.C.), Haley Pasion (119, Kawano B.C.), Gardenia Sims (152, Kawano B.C.) and Fallon Farrar (165, Club Discipline B.C.).

Retiring Hawaii Pacific University president Chatt G. Wright has been awarded the Pacific West Conference Presidential Achievement Award, an honor given to presidents by PacWest institutions for their outstanding service to their college and their commitment to collegiate athletics.
