Hawaii Pacific starts Hall of Fame

Five individuals make up the inaugural Hawaii Pacific Hall of Fame class — Benny Agbayani, Jurgen Malbeck, Llewellyn Smalley, Tita Ahuna and Suzie Schoales.

They will be inducted in September.

Agbayani is the HPU baseball team’s all-time leader in steals with 83 and he ranks sixth in average, third in home runs, fourth in runs scores and ninth in hits on the Sea Warriors’ all-time lists.

He went on to play for the New York Mets and was part of the team that lost the 2000 World Series to the New York Yankees.

Malbeck was the 1997 NAIA player of the year in men’s basketball. He is HPU’s all-time leader in field-goal percentage and ranks third in school history in points, second in blocks and fourth in field goals, free throws and rebounds.

Smalley is the Sea Warriors’ all-time men’s basketball leader in points with 1,808. He is also first in school history in field goals and 3-pointers, tied for first in games played, and third in rebounds and steals.

Ahuna won two NCAA Division II national championships as head coach of the women’s volleyball team and was the 2000 D-II national coach of the year.

Schoales holds the school softball record for innings pitched and strikeouts in a game (12) and she has 77 career wins.

Story, Souza at QB Club

Michael Story and Kanani Souza are the guest speakers at Monday’s meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Story is the tourism and sports manager of the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Souza is retiring from his position as athletic director at Kamehameha. He is also a former football coach at the school and a former football assistant with the University of Hawaii.

The meeting starts with lunch at 11:30 a.m. at the Maple Garden restaurant. The cost is $15 per person and the public is invited.
