Canadian visitor died from accidental fall

The Medical Examiner’s Office determined Tuesday that a 61-year-old Canadian visitor’s death from injuries suffered at Mokolii Islet, commonly known as Chinaman’s Hat, was due to an accidental fall.

Wayne Anderson of Calgary, Alberta, died of head injuries, according to medical examiners. Anderson and his wife were spending the summer in Hawaii.

Ocean Safety Division Operations Chief Jim Howe said Anderson’s wife told lifeguards her husband had been gone for a long time. A lifeguard paddled out to the island on a rescue board, climbed to the peak and spotted the man entangled in a bush, Howe said. Because the man was on the seaward side of the island, he was not visible to lifeguards at Kualoa Beach Park.

Anderson was airlifted to Kualoa Ranch and taken by ambulance in extremely critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he died Monday night.

Although the islet falls under city jurisdiction, there are no rules for it.

City Parks and Recreation Director Gary Cabato said, "We don’t regulate it, we don’t control it and we don’t monitor who’s on the island. I don’t know if (warning) signage is the right answer. I could put signs up, but it would be very difficult to enforce."

Multiple charges filed in SUV case

A Kailua-Kona man was charged with several crimes after allegedly ramming his ex-wife’s SUV with his pickup truck Saturday and allegedly stealing a backpack belonging to her 25-year-old male passenger.

Curtis L. Warner appeared in District Court on Tuesday. His bail was set at $129,500.

Police issued an all-points bulletin for his arrest after Warner allegedly entered his ex-wife’s SUV at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Kailua-Kona and took a backpack belonging to the Kailua-Kona man.

At 5 p.m. Saturday, police got a report that Warner allegedly rammed the woman’s SUV several times with his pickup truck on Hualalalai Road above Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona.

Police found Warner within an hour and arrested him.

He was charged Monday with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, second-degree theft, first-degree criminal property damage, second-degree criminal property damage, two counts of terroristic threatening, two counts of reckless endangering, unauthorized possession of confidential information, promoting a dangerous drug, promoting a detrimental drug and possessing drug paraphernalia.
