The University of Hawaii football team will need to wait a few more days to learn about the availability of its No. 1 punt returner.
Samson Anguay said he suffered a torn ACL in his right knee while running a pass route during the players-coordinated passing drills last week.
"I planted it the wrong way, and all I heard was a ‘pop’ in my knee," Anguay said.
He was on the Ching Athletic Complex turf for a couple of minutes before being helped to the UH athletic complex. Coaches and staff are not allowed to attend the unsupervised workouts. The players called George Lumpkin, the Warriors’ director of player personnel, who then notified the athletic trainers.
Anguay underwent an MRI on Thursday. This week, Anguay said, "The doctor told me (the right ACL is) torn. I’m not sure if it’s just a strain or something more."
Anguay said he will meet with the UH medical staff this week to discuss his treatment.
Surgery is the usual option. UH running back Hogan Rosehill and safety Jordan Gomes underwent ACL surgeries last fall. They are expected to be ready for the start of training camp in August.
"I’m not in that much pain," Anguay said. "My whole family says, ‘You’re walking?’ I can bend it a little. There’s no swelling anymore."
Anguay, a 2010 Campbell High graduate, made an oral commitment to UH in the summer of 2009. He agreed to join the Warriors as a grayshirt.
Anguay attended UH as a part-time student during the 2010 fall semester. He joined the Warriors in January.
Because of his quickness and build (5-8, 168 pounds ), Anguay has drawn comparisons to former Warrior Chad Owens.
Anguay, who is competing at slotback, was named the Warriors’ No. 1 punt returner at the end of spring training. Cornerback Tank Hopkins is considered to be No. 2. Last year’s punt returners — Greg Salas, Kealoha Pilares and Ryan Henry — completed their UH eligibility.
For now, Anguay said, "I’m icing it. I’m trying not to let my leg lock up. I’m trying to keep the motion still going. I bend it here and there."
