Kono, Galdiano advance at Publinx
Hawaii golfers Stephanie Kono and Mariel Galdiano survived the first round of match play Wednesday at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in Bandon, Ore.
Galdiano, 13, faces 15-year-old Julie Yang of Mesa, Ariz., today in the round of 32. Kono will meet Hanule Seo of St. Louis, Mo.
Kono, a Punahou graduate, held off Gianna Misenhelter 1 up in the first round. Kono birdied the 13th and 15th holes to go 3 up. Misenhelter won the next two holes, but a halve on No. 18 was enough for Kono to advance.
Galdiano, a Maryknoll eighth-grader, defeated Demi Frances Runas 2 and 1. Galdiano took her first lead of the match with a birdie on the par-5 15th hole and went 2 up with a par on No. 16.
Two local players lost their first-round matches. Allisen Corpuz lost to Katie-Rose Higgins 1 up, and Ciera Min of Hilo lost to Tiffany Lua 2 up.
Maekawa loses in first round
Sean Maekawa of Paauilo lost his first-round match at the U.S. Amateur Public Links, also being held at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
Maekawa was the lone Hawaii player to qualify for the match-play bracket. He dropped the final four holes of his match and J.J. Spaun of Los Angeles won 1 up.
Cobb pins Cross in pro wrestling
"Mr. Athletic" Jeff Cobb successfully defended his Action Zone Wrestling heavyweight title Monday night in a marathon match against independent pro wrestling sensation "M-Dogg 20" Matt Cross at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu.
The 24-minute main event of AZW’s Anniversary Annihilation 6 show was a clinic in exhibition wrestling as both men employed their signature moves, but ultimately it was a pin by Cobb that won the bout.
Anniversary Annihilation 6, which featured four matches prior to Cobb and Cross’ main event, drew more than 250 fans, AZW founder Daryl Bonilla said.
"It felt great to wrestle in Hawaii again and be welcomed back with such open arms," said Cross, who had wrestled in AZW’s first anniversary show in 2006.
Cobb said it was an "honor and a privilege" to face off against Cross, who said he will "continue to travel the world honing my craft with my sights set on the pinnacle of sports entertainment, the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)."
