A remembrance for Harold B. Estes, who is credited with helping bring the USS Missouri and USS Bowfin to Hawaii, will be held July 9 at 5 p.m. aboard the Battleship Missouri Memorial. The community is invited to attend.
Estes, a retired Navy chief boatswain’s mate, died May 17 on Oahu at the age of 96.
The Honolulu Council of the Navy League of the United States, Navy Region Hawaii Chief Petty Officers and the USS Missouri Memorial Association Inc. are organizing the remembrance.
Those wishing to attend must RSVP in advance at bit.ly/EstesMemorial.
Born in 1914 in Oklahoma, Estes enlisted in the Navy in 1934. He served aboard the USS California, USS Iuka II, USS Henrico and on a variety of other ships and shore stations.
After retiring, Estes and his wife, Doris, moved to Hawaii in 1963.
Those who knew him say Estes’ unique talent for motivating others became legendary in the islands, particularly in Navy, Rotarian and Masonic circles. He is credited with reinvigorating the leadership and membership of the Honolulu Navy League.
