Lau third at surf nationals
Kamehameha’s Ezekiel Lau placed third in the varsity men’s division at last month’s NSSA National Interscholastic Championships at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Lau scored a 9.73 to help Kamehameha finish seventh out of 12 varsity high school teams. Lehua Wall advanced to the women’s varsity semifinals before being eliminated.
Kamehameha’s middle school team also finished seventh out of nine teams. Imaikalani DeVault was fourth in boys shortboard and younger sister Kawai DeVault was sixth in girls shortboard. Kahiamaikalani Walker placed sixth in longboard.
The team combined students from the Kamehameha campuses on Oahu and Maui.
‘Fish Fry’ surf meet this weekend
The inaugural Aloha Boardshop’s Honolulu Fish Fry, presented by Oxbow, is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday of Kuhio Beach.
The contest highlights the classic "fish tail" shape of custom surfboards. All contestants will be required to compete on a fish surfboard provided by Aloha Boardshop and donated by local shapers.
Entry fees are $40 for individual and $100 for team challenges. Surfing is set for 7 a.m. both days. Visit alohaboardshop.com.
HulaCross at Kalaeloa on Sunday
HulaCross, an extreme offroad event, returns to Kalaeloa Raceway Park on Sunday.
Races consist of time attacks and wheel-to-wheel racing. Cars are available to race all day for $200.

Manago ride for safety education
The inaugural Zachary Manago Ride in Paradise, benefiting the Hawaii Bicycling League’s Safety Education & Awareness Program, begins its 144-mile course around Oahu on Saturday morning in Wahiawa.
The ride is dedicated to Manago, a Moanalua High and Hawaii Pacific University baseball player who was killed by a hit-and-run driver while on a group ride last December. Saturday’s 68-mile ride is from Wahiawa around Kaena Point to the State Capitol. Sunday’s 78-mile course is from the State Capitol around south Oahu to Haleiwa.
There is no entry fee but donations will go to HBL’s safety education fund started by the Manago family. For information, go to HBL.org.
