Softball, boxing on QB Club agenda

Mid-Pacific softball coach Willie Quinn and two local boxers headline the agenda for Monday’s meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Quinn led the Owls to their first state championship this spring and will be joined by pitcher Keiki Carlos.

Haley Pasion and Lisa Ha recently medaled at the USA Boxing national championships with Team Hawaii. Coach Stu Okamoto is also scheduled to speak at the meeting.

The club meets at the Maple Garden restaurant. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program to start at noon. The cost is $15 per person for members and guests.

UH represented at Canadian Open

University of Hawaii pitchers Stephanie Ricketts and Kaia Parnaby were among current and former Rainbow Wahine softball players who saw action on the opening day of the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship in Surrey, British Columbia.

Ricketts gave up three runs on five hits and struck out seven over five innings in the California A’s 4-3 win over the White Rock Renegades. Parnaby gave up four runs on six hits in three innings in Team Australia’s 5-0 loss to Team USA, the reigning world champion.

Earlier in the day, former UH standouts Clare Warwick, Stacey Porter and Justine Smethurst helped Australia defeat Team Venezuela 9-5. Warwick went 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Porter also drove in a run. Smethurst closed out the win with an inning of relief.

Jenna Rodriguez, who completed her UH career this spring, walked in her lone plate appearance in Team Canada’s 8-1 win over Team Venezuela.

3 boats pull out of Transpac

Mechanical issues forced three boats out of contention in the Transpac yacht race.

Crash returned to California due to a leak in its fresh-water maker. Peregrine also withdrew with a similar problem. Narrow Escape pulled out due to steering issues.

Bebe lost its steering chain, but stayed in second place in its division while the crew made the repairs.
